Game 3: September, 5, 1995


It’s the “silver medal” game that no one remembers. But for one brief period, it was the talk of all baseball. Cal Ripken and Lou Gehrig. Tied, at last. There was even one column that proposed they stay that way. That Cal voluntarily sit out the following night. No way was that going to happen.

I could tell you all about the thrills of that night. The thunderous ovation that occurred at the end of 4 1/2 innings when the game became ‘official.’ The homerun that Cal hit. The gracious manner that Cal acknowledged all this. It was all so special. And of course, it was completely eclipsed by what happened the following night. But for one brief moment…
