Birds’ Formula Fails

April92017

If the the O’s are going to make the playoffs, it will be with power and the bullpen. That’s what people seem to be saying. Today they got neither.

I went up to the Yards this afternoon hoping to see the Orioles win their fifth straight and they were scheduled to play the Yankees. For five innings it looked like it would happen. O’s starter Wade Miley pitched well when he wasn’t walking batters. The Yanks didn’t get their first hit until the 5th. Baltimore’s hitters weren’t exactly robust but they managed to put together three runs during that same period.

Then it all fell apart as the Yankee bats came alive against a succession of Orioles relievers. It got rather ugly by the end.

A couple of oddities:

Matt Holliday came to the plate five times and he was “0 for 0” (he walked all five times).

The Yanks have a shortstop named Ronald Torreyes. He’s 5 feet 8 inches. He had three hits, including a monster triple. From a distance he sort of reminded me of Phil Rizzuto.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning Caleb Joseph came to the plate with two men on and only one out. He’s still looking for his first RBI since 2015. Would this be the time? Nope, he grounded out. We’re still waiting.
